Equipment: Korg Electribe EMX-1
I was ecstatic the day I brought home my EMX-1. I was very impressed with the drum sounds and the vacuum tube circuitry can create some really powerful tones. It has some interesting effects, some of which I have no software equivilents of (or at least am unaware if I do).
The EMX-1 completely changed the way I make beats. I use to make them right into the same FL Studio file as the rest of the song. Now I start developing a beat on the EMX-1, complete with effects to spice it up, and then record it as a raw wave. I then take that wave into FL Studio's Fruity Slicer. From here, I make many variations and fills of the beat by rearranging sections of the waveform and adding new effects to specific sections. This gets me an interesting sound that I find easy to work with.
The EMX-1 is more than just a drum machine, though. It is actually a very capable synthesizer as well. There are many nice presets by default and there are plenty of options for creating your own unique synths as well. Unfortunately, sequencing synth sections on the device itself can be a real chore. Luckily, with my MIDI enabled sound card, I am now able to sequence a pattern in FL Studio and send the MIDI data straight to the EMX-1 and record it back into Adobe Audition as a waveform. While the pattern is playing, I am even able to tweak the various settings and effects on the EMX-1 in real time.
